Welcome to the Water Sommelier Union
The Water Sommelier Union is the association of all Water Sommeliers throughout the world.
Water Sommeliers are individuals who are qualified through training and theoretical and practical examination as skilled and competent experts in the field of the cultural beverage mineral water and spring water. They are also able to give advice on other types of water.
A Water Sommelier advises restaurant guests and proprietors on the mineral waters on the menu and helps to find the ideal water for the dishes and beverages chosen. In addition, the Water Sommelier is responsible for the perfect presentation of the beverage to guests, for purchasing water and for compiling a water menu.
In the retail beverage store, Water Sommeliers act as skilled consultants who are able to inform customers on the various water types ‘natural mineral water’, ‘natural curative water’, ‘spring water’ and ‘table water’ and to explain the health benefits of each type of water. They help customers to choose the best possible water for their needs. In addition, the water sommelier is responsible for presentations and sales campaigns in beverage retail.
In mineral water and spring water industry, the Water Sommelier works mainly in marketing and sales, providing clients from gastronomy and retail with well-founded information and advice on the special properties and benefits of the water. Through active water marketing, the water sommelier also promotes the acceptance and turnover of the mineral water or spring water bottler.
The Water Sommelier Union
Germany’s first certified Water Sommeliers, who were trained at the Doemens Savour Academy in Munich-Graefelfing in the spring of 2011, met in October 2011 in Haan near Düsseldorf to set about founding the ‘Water Sommelier Union’. Since December 2011 the association has also been recorded in the register of associations (Vereinsregister) in Munich (VR204018).
The purpose of the association is to support the ideological and economic interests of the trained Water Sommeliers and thus to promote the cultural beverage mineral water and spring water. The association’s goal is to support all the interests of Water Sommeliers, in particular with regard to training and advanced training. Events are held for sharing thoughts, experiences and ideas. Regular meetings provide opportunities for further training as well as the chance to actively exchange ideas within the group.
